Currently 1 out of every 88 individuals is diagnosed with Autism. In Delaware, approximately 1,200 children in Delaware public schools were classified with Autism during the past school year. Realizing the high probability of interacting with someone with Autism during an emergency, the Delaware MRC, in partnership with the University of Delaware, conducted an Autism and Emergency Preparedness training last November. With funding from Citizen Corp and space from the Delaware Fire School, the Delaware MRC unit hosted a two hour training with a nationally recognized autism subject matter expert. The training provided MRC volunteers with the tools and resources needed to meet the needs of autistic individuals and their caregivers in emergency shelters.

With the success of this training, the Delaware MRC unit plans to host its next specialized training focusing on preparedness efforts for those with Alzheimer's. For additional information on preparedness efforts for those with functional and access needs, please visit www.Delawaretips.org. This mobile site was developed by the Center for Disabilities Studies at the University of Delaware to assist first responders and others who assist individuals with disabilities during an emergency.
